The first number collects three short pieces from the commons, chosen for how they sit next to each other rather than for any theme.
The oldest is a traveller’s account, written by someone with no gift for landscape and an unusual ear for how people speak. The second is a letter that was never sent. The third is a fragment, and it stops where the manuscript does.
Fragments are worth setting properly. A text that breaks off mid-thought is not a failure of the text.
